SUMMARY:International Post-Graduate Course on Protein Quality Control
DESCRIPTION:Siena\, Italy. \nPurified proteins stand as a central focus in numerous research laboratories\, where they are used for a wide spectrum of applications ranging from 3D structural analysis\, through X-ray\, cryoEM\, and NMR studies\, to in-depth investigations into interactions (protein-protein\, protein-ligand\, or protein-nucleic acid) and cell biology experiments. Furthermore\, these proteins play a crucial role in characterizing biological (e.g. enzymatic) activities. Beyond the realm of academic research\, purified proteins serve as efficient tools in the therapeutic and diagnostic landscape\, finding applications in various pharmaceutical industries. To ensure the reliability of experimental data in these studies\, stringent protein quality controls are imperative. In 2021\, the collaborative efforts of the ARBRE-MOBIEU and P4EU networks resulted in the publication of comprehensive guidelines for evaluating purified proteins in life sciences and medical trials (de Marco et al.\, 2021; Berrow et al.\, 2021). The objective of this course is to familiarize participants with these guidelines for protein quality control and to provide an overview of the technologies essential for enhancing the accuracy and reproducibility of data obtained with purified proteins. Throughout the course\, participants will have access to the theoretical foundations of these technologies and will also gain hands-on experience with them\, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. \nTarget audience \nThis course is designed for scientists currently using or intending to use purified proteins in their laboratory experiments. By the end of the course\, participants should be familiar with a variety of techniques applicable to purified proteins\, ultimately enhancing the reliability and reproducibility of data in downstream applications involving these proteins.

Additonally\, the design of interfaces which provide dynamic and controlled spatio-temporal stimuli as well as the drug design\, by controlling the behaviour of protein-drug\, lipid-drug or also protien /enzyme-nanoparoticle interfaces will be presented. The workshop aims at understanding a multidisciplinary area – biological interaces – from a more biophysical point of view\, a unique perspective not addressed by any other conference\, workshop or course.

SUMMARY:EMBO-FEBS Lecture course: Physical Virology: across length scales
DESCRIPTION:Sant Feliu de Guixols\, Spain \nOur preparedness against viral diseases and our ability to exploit viral structures to advance technology\, both require multidisciplinary collaborations. In this context\, physics-oriented approaches and the study of viral infection from the standpoint of a physicist with emerging biophysical tools\, provide critical insights to the field of virology. The field of physical virology contributes to a new transdisciplinary paradigm that scrutinizes the very mechanisms that determine the assembly\, stability and disassembly of viruses that are key to understand the interplay of structure\, property and function. Beyond the intrinsic biological interest\, this understanding facilitates the development of virus-inspired materials for technological applications. The EMBO|FEBS Lecture Course “Physical Virology: across length scales” aims at gathering researchers from various scientific disciplines with a common interest in viruses and at inspiring a new generation of transdisciplinary virus-oriented scientists. The program will address fundamental aspects of infection across the length scales from a multidisciplinary vantage point. It will further highlight promising methodological developments for the field of physical virology before addressing applied aspects of virology (virus-inspired materials\, therapeutics and diagnostics).

SUMMARY:Time-resolved spectroscopy meets time-resolved crystallography: The future of dynamic photobiology
DESCRIPTION:Pécs\, Hungary \n\nFEBS 2025 Advanced Course\nElucidating signal transduction processes in biology is fundamental\, if we want to understand the mechanisms of life and engineer novel photoreceptors with custom-tailored light-regulated function. However\, watching proteins work in various time scales (from the femtosecond to the steady state) is very challenging and has been the subject of intense research. \n\n\n\nTime-resolved spectroscopy has revolutionized the understanding of protein function by probing excited states and revealing the kinetic profile of light-triggered intermediates. On the other hand\, time-resolved X-ray techniques have generated atomic resolution models of structural intermediates and revealed conformational dynamics by providing snapshots of the dynamic processes in light-sensitive biomolecules. None of these experimental techniques is able to unravel dynamic processes in biomolecules by itself\, whereas quantum mechanical and classical dynamics numerical calculations are needed to complement the experimental results. To that goal\, the synergy of time-resolved spectroscopy and time-resolved X-ray techniques is indispensable as it provides the necessary temporal and spatial resolution to reveal the functional dynamics of biomolecules.

DESCRIPTION:Oxford\, UK \nThe physics of collective cell dynamics and morphogenesis is a highly interdisciplinary field that draws ideas from physics and mathematics to help understanding the development of multicellular organisms. Complementing the traditional route of biology\, the perspective of cells and tissues as out-of-equilibrium materials with quantifiable physical properties offers novel insights into developmental biology\, organoid dynamics and physical principles that can underlie certain diseases. In particular\, by regarding the collective organisation of cells and morphogenesis as processes that are governed by both biochemical signals and mechanical forces\, experimental tools and theoretical approaches from physics can contribute significantly to the mechanistic understanding of processes in living systems. These tools and approaches include the mechanical characterisation of cells and tissues\, theories of active soft matter\, out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics\, mechano-chemical pattern formation and computational modelling.

ML has rapidly become a significant part of research across all scientific areas\, including the physical sciences. SUMMARY:Biophysical methods for the real-time characterization of biomolecular interactions (Kinetics2025)
DESCRIPTION:The MOSBRI Advanced Level School\, ALS2\, takes place in at Institut Pasteur\, Paris. The real-time monitoring of binding kinetics provides a much more accurate representation of biological processes than end-point « equilibrium » measurements. Knowing how fast interaction partners associate and what is the time stability of biomolecular assemblies is crucial to understand the dynamics of living systems. The objective of the theoretical/practical “Kinetics2025” course is to illustrate the large diversity of biophysical methods that have been developed over the years for the determination of rates of association (kon) and dissociation (koff) in a variety of contexts\, and to provide an invaluable opportunity to assess hands-on the strong points of a number of commercially available instruments.
