DESCRIPTION:Online. \nFor this inaugural yEBSA online scientific seminar\, we are thrilled to announce a talk from Prof. Stefan W. Hell\, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2014 and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences and the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research.  \nProf. Hell is an internationally recognized leader and pioneer in the biophysical field of super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Mostly known for the invention and development STED-microscopy\, he overcame the Abbe diffraction limit that had constrained optical microscopy to moderate spatial resolutions for more than a century. After winning the Nobel Prize for this revolutionary technique\, Prof. Hell continued to push the boundaries of optical imaging by the development of MINFLUX\, achieving molecular and even sub-molecular resolution. These high-resolution imaging methods enable the investigation of living samples and the tracking of molecular trajectories within biological systems. \nThe seminar will take place on Tuesday 10th of February 2026. SUMMARY:The non-equilibrium genome - where Physics meets Biology
DESCRIPTION:Dresden\, Germany. \nBiological function relies on coordinated cell behavior\, driven by molecular processes involving DNA in the cell nucleus. The 3D genome refers to the hierarchical and organized packing of the meter-long DNA into the nucleus. The 1D genome refers to the functional roles of DNA regions and epigenetic modifications (like methylation) that form a non-equilibrium\, dynamic code. The goal of the workshop is to present the mechanisms by which 1D and 3D processes are integrated together\, and the consequent emergence of complex spatio-temporal structures in the tight nuclear environment. \n

At this institute\, she leads a group conducting cutting-edge biophysical research investigating the early steps of programmed cell death by mitochondria – processes of major relevance to biology and medicine. Her team combines advanced imaging approaches\, including super-resolution microscopy\, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In addition\, she developed AI-based algorithms to analyze biophysical datasets and characterize pore structures in the outer mitochondrial membrane.\nOver the course of her career\, Prof. García-Sáez has received numerous distinctions\, including recognition as an EMBO Young Investigator and as a Henriette Herz Scout of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation\, and she has been awarded multiple grants from the European Research Council (ERC). \nThe seminar will take place on Friday 24th of April 2026. DESCRIPTION:Naples\, Italy. \nThe International Symposium on Flowing Droplets: Where Fluid Mechanics and Rheology meet Soft Matter for Industrial applications will take place in Naples (Italy) from April 26 to 29\, 2026 under the auspices of the Department of Chemical\, Materials and Production Engineering of the University of Napoli Federico II and of the Italian National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology (INSTM). The symposium will address fundamental and applied aspects of droplet flow behaviour\, with emphasis on deformation\, breakup\, and coalescence phenomena in both dilute and concentrated systems. Particular attention will be given to the role of hydrodynamic interactions\, interfacial properties\, and external fields in governing droplet behaviour. The symposium will also encompass complex droplet systems\, including biological\, multiphase\, and active droplets\, where additional physicochemical and dynamical couplings give rise to novel flow responses. The symposium aims to bring together participants from several disciplines\, including physics\, chemistry\, biology and engineering\, who share a common interest in the experimental and theoretical aspects of the flow behaviour of droplets and its applications.

SUMMARY:FEBS 2026 Advanced Course - Lost in integration vol. 2: Probing biomolecules with AI and experiments
DESCRIPTION:Spetses Island\, Greece. \nThe FEBS Advanced Course\, Lost in Integration Vol. 2 – probing biomolecules with AI and experiments will take place from 10th to 16th of May 10 2026 on the idyllic island of Spetses in Greece. The course is aimed at PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers interested in integrative structural biology.  \nIntegrative structural biology is an interdisciplinary field that has seen explosive growth due to technological revolution in biological structure analysis. This field incorporates a wide range of techniques and advanced computational and machine learning approaches. When integrated\, these techniques provide insights beyond static molecular structures\, revealing dynamic interactions and behaviours that are crucial for understanding biology and biomedical research. Simply put\, traditional structural biology has provided high-resolution images of biomolecules but is limited to static representations; integrative structural biology allows researchers to observe molecular movement and interactions in real-time within their biological environments. It also brings into light entire new classes of biomolecules—in particular\, those that are dynamic and difficult to study as well as complexes of ever-increasing sizes. Thus\, integrative structural biology not only expands the range of methods used to study molecular structure and function\, but also substantially expands the scope of problems that can be addressed.  \nAt this course\, students will learn to understand\, use\, and interpret data from a multitude of different techniques including cryo-electron microscopy\, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy\, X-ray crystallography\, cryo-electron tomography\, small-angle X-ray scattering\, mass spectrometry\, and single-molecule methods such as optical tweezers and Förster resonance energy transfer. Further\, students will learn how to integrate data using advanced computational and machine learning techniques.  \nThe course will include plenary lectures by esteemed scientists\, poster sessions\, panel discussions\, journal club\, group discussions\, and a mentoring session led by Professor Emeritus Jane Clarke (University of Cambridge). These sessions will allow participants to receive practical feedback on their research projects\, both from their peers and the participating senior scientists. In addition to the scientific activities\, social dinners and an excursion around the island will also be organized.

It covers the full spectrum of single-molecule biophysics\, highlighting recent advances and their applications to biology and related fields. \nThe seminar will feature approximately 10 oral presentations and two poster sessions\, and all attendees are expected to actively contribute by presenting either a talk or a poster. An abstract is required for all applications.
